Slot Machines Classes

It must be born in mind that several states permitting gambling have placed restrictive measures on the class of slot machines that is permissible in casinos and gambling dens. Class III slots – known simply as traditional slot machines – work independently from a central computer system. Licenses for these types of slots are strictly limited and casinos must pay heavy fees to the state for them. This type of system virtually guarantees that a player’s payout possibility is the same as any other player enjoying the game. The most popular locales for Class III slots (Vegas-style slots) are predominantly found in the state of Nevada and also in New Jersey’s famed Atlantic City. Players compete against the house with Class III slots.

Video lottery terminals are known as Class II slot machines and are less strictly policed. The casino owners are allowed greater latitude to operate these games. These, unlike Class III slots, are connected to a centralized computing system that actually determines the outcome of each wager. It is important to understand the difference here. While they are both connected to a central computer, Class II machines are connected to a hub which is given an equal chance of winning a limited amount of prizes, with players competing against one another. These are not unlike lotto tickets. And there is no need for a player’s skill level to factor into the definition of either slot class.

Important distinctions between Class II and Class III slot machines:

Class II slot machines are incapable of producing their own results because unlike Class III slot machines, they don’t have Random Number Generators (RNGs). The way in which Class II slot machines generate their results is from a centralized computer while Class III slots are independent units.

Class II slots are common in bingo gaming where everyone has the same overall objective of scoring bingo. The player competes against other players for a common prize and winning is not guaranteed every game. The gaming combinations and win/loss ratios are fixed per ‘pack’ of gaming results. Essentially one game relies on the preceding game’s results. Class III slots games are like free-thinking machines. They act independently and players are competing against the house. There is no correlation between previous winnings and future winnings – it’s all governed by chance and RNGs.
